There have been strifes between families these few years over territories, drug routes and what not. Times have changed, and betrayal is on the high with easily bought over loyalties. Whoever is willing to spend the most money will no doubt gain an upper hand over the rest quickly.
But not for the Nikiforov family.
A trail of bodies are left behind every time someone even thought of betraying the Nikiforov family. Word is that the Pakhan himself doesn't even need to lift a finger, that he has someone working behind the shadows for him. And word spreads fast, especially in this world. Every second counts, and if you're slower for just one second it will cost you your life.

It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.
But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.

Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.
