Bucky still has his hand up, looking for the check, and he slaps it back down to the bar.
“Um, no. Don’t have to be, anyway.”
The man smiles again, and, damn, if that doesn’t make Bucky feel warm all over.
“I’m Sam.”
“Bucky.”
The man - Sam - lifts an eyebrow. “Bucky?”
“Nickname that stuck.”
“Short for...?”
“I’ll buy you a drink if you guess right.”
Sam smiles again, wider this time, so that Bucky can see a small gap between his front teeth. “You won’t otherwise?”
Bucky smiles back. It’s hard not to. “No, no, I still will. But I want to hear you guess.”

Sam tilts his head, trying not to smile sympathetically at the admission. He doesn't want to make Bucky feel bad by admitting he absolutely knew that fact.
