“But, you’re not in love with me”, she whispered. “Are you?”
“Well,” began Laudna, but she paused to ponder the question. It was something she had briefly mulled over in the moment, trying to define the edges of where one kind of love ended and another began, before getting swept away again in the changing conversation without a satisfactory answer.
“I’m not entirely sure,” she admitted. Imogen nodded once with pursed lips, and Laudna instantly felt bad for not knowing the answer. She wasn’t entirely sure why Imogen was even asking her about it.
Then a thought came to her. A silly one, surely, but a thread had tied itself to it as soon as it formed, and she found herself unable not to follow it.
“Are you in love with me?”

“We’d like one unassembled owlbear, please,” the tiefling says to Nettie, holding out a small pouch. Nettie nearly drops it; the fabric feels like burning coals. “Shit,” the tiefling says apologetically, digging in her pocket and flipping Nettie a few extra coins. “Sorry. I run hot.”
“You don’t want to each make your own?” Nettie asks. It’s both an upselling tactic and a genuine question. How are three grown women supposed to share one stuffed animal?
The tiefling’s jaw drops. “Abso-fucking-lutely we do,” she says, heat crackling off of her skin. “How much is it to do three? More, right? Shadowheart, give the nice lady some gold.”
