“He said that he would be in need of a wife for the chambers to take him seriously for promotion. It’s a question of status as much as anything, you understand. Tom said that…well, that it didn’t much matter who the wife was as long as they were vaguely tolerable.”
Mary felt her nose twitch. Her hands had balled into fists under the table in her lap.
“...Vaguely tolerable?”
aka: ryder is getting a bit desperate, so he tells a white lie to dissuade mary from tom. naturally, it only brings them closer (after a few tears are shed)

Summary
Through stubbornness and what Kakashi calls a ‘dazzling display of heart,’ Iruka somehow befriends the CEO of Hatake Corp, Hatake himself. And no, despite what Iruka’s friends might think, Kakashi is not his sugar daddy. Kakashi is giving and selfless, and he’s Iruka’s friend, kind and reliable. Sure, he does constantly try to buy Iruka things, and he’s attentive, almost overwhelmingly so, but that’s just how he is: Kakashi is lonely. He’s not used to having friends.
Besides, their relationship is totally platonic. There's no sugaring. If anything—and this is a big if—he’d be something like a… Sugar Friend. Yeah, something adjacent to that.
Iruka is becoming increasingly unsure if that is actually true.

She falls asleep on him, nose twitching as she snores, clutching his tail to her chest like he’s the small, fuzzy, huggable thing. He doesn’t dare put his arm around her. He’s not dense— he knows what this would be if this were anyone else, if this were a cute girl he’d picked up at a bar that he’d wined and dined and cuddled with all night on the couch. He’d wake her with a kiss and see where things take them, if this were some girl.
But it’s Judy, and Nick’s just happy she’s here, so he doesn’t wake her at all.
(Nick thinks he's writing down observations about the most interesting mammal in his life. What he's really doing is falling head over tail in love.
And he's going to be annoying about it, because he's a bastard.)
