Prior to that, they were the best of friends, and it's important that what they have isn't rushed. Frank won't make that mistake again. Neither will Mel.

    Instead of Langdon and Robby having that conversation in the finale, they have it during the fireworks outside, and it's much more heated. Nasty words are exchanged, Langdon punches Robby in the face, and Robby tries to kill himself shortly after. And that night, punching an attending became the starting point of everything that comes after.

    Which (coincidentally, in its own, twisted way) is how Mel and Frank come to be.
