Once upon a time, after the fall of SHIELD, Steve Rogers watched as his former friend/former Hydra victim, who lashed out at all the other Avengers (including him), seemed to allow only one to get close - and was that flirting between Bucky and Tony? But this is not that story either.
This is the story of a little over a year after the second meeting of Tony Stark and the now James Barnes. Along with a Secret Santa gift exchange. And a surprise. And what on earth is DUM-E up to?

Forgiveness is a journey, or so Tony was maybe told a long time ago. He doesn't know about any of that and doesn't particularly care to. In the wake of civil war, the Avengers remain, as do their enemies. And Tony Stark rebuilds, as always.
He destroys the phone, he burns the letter. But he can't (he won't) eliminate Steve Rogers from his mind.

“Yo, are you fucking insane?” asked Erik, and, between the gun in his hands and the way Thor was staring at him in confused disbelief, a hand over his shoulder, it was clear that he had used it on him once already. Ineffectively, cause Thor was a god - and Tony had just nearly died again, holy shit - but enough to stun him.
“Erik-” started Tony, but it came out a little croaky, and he put a hand on his neck at the pain. That fucking hurt.
Erik seemed to grow further angry, while Thor frowned at Tony. “What fucking business does your ass have, grabbing an unarmed civilian by the neck? Look at how he sounds after less than a second in your fucking paws, were you fucking trying to kill him?”
