Of course they decide to take a boat out to Tol Himling to see if they can find anything interesting, despite the fact that any researcher to have set foot on the island has been recorded as having a mental breakdown and never returning.
They weren't exactly expecting to be able to explore it, but they certainly didn't expect what they found there.
