    Summary

It has been decades since the mountain god had called forth his demand for a sacrifice. He shook the mountains with his terrifying power, and prepared for his blood-lust to be satisfied in a battle against the strongest warrior that Karakura has to offer.

But war has wracked the kingdom for nearly thirteen years and all the strongest warriors are gone.

The mountain god’s demand cannot be ignored forever.

Naples, 2014. Melone's alive, and he doesn't ask himself or anybody else why or how. All he knows is he skipped a couple of years, good ones, being dead and in the meantime Prosciutto had the gall to open a flower shop, of all things.

He was probably doing something wrong.

It seemed like a pretty safe bet. Doppio liked to imagine that he was at least reasonably competent at his job (surely the Boss would not have allowed anything else) but he could concede that perhaps there existed people who were more naturally shrewd, cunning and bloodthirsty. That was why the Boss monitored him, coached him, explained some of the finer details to him when he started to fall behind. That was why he let him borrow a part of his stand. It was meant to cover for his own little inadequacies, to help him do things he couldn't do alone. He was supposed to use it when he needed it. That was the whole point.

Still, Doppio could not quite believe that the Boss had ever intended for him to use it quite like this, or anticipated that he would have this particular need. It just wasn't something that a person like him, content to be above everyone else, could ever understand.

    Summary

“I’m going to church,” Prosciutto finally admits, grudgingly, because sometimes it seems like the truth is the only way to disarm Melone (and maybe dissuade him - Prosciutto has a vague half-formed assumption in the back of his mind that Melone can’t tread on hallowed ground). Melone, as it turns out, isn't really disarmed, but he does release Prosciutto’s elbow and squint at him.

    “You're what?”

“Midnight mass.” Melone blinks. “It’s Christmas Eve,” Prosciutto prompts. Still nothing.

    “You're a Christian,” Melone finally manages. It’s a confirmation, not a question.

    “A Catholic.”

“We kill people for money,” Melone says, another probing confirmation.

    “Didn't say I was a good one.”

    ---

On Christmas Eve, 1999, Melone learns a little bit about Prosciutto's personal life (whether Prosciutto wants him to or not).

AKA, [Clickbait Voice] MELONE REACTS!!!! to the liturgy of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

    Summary

Elias rolls his eyes, thinking it best not to answer. He instead flicks through his copy of the leaflet, making the conscious decision to read it with his own eyes. The first page is a map of the museum, and the second contains white text laid over a self-portrait of Benjamin, painted sometime between their final meeting and his death in 1857.

“... While his later life saw Earnest’s name become well-known in Victorian society, many of his works, along with his life, from the early 19th century have become something of a mystery- until now,” the leaflet proudly proclaims, “With the help of both his family and the family of Barnabas Bennett - a recurring character in Earnest’s earlier life and many of his paintings - the National Gallery are ecstatic to present these works, alongside long-lost letters and writings, that document the fascinating social circle that the painter became entangled with.” The words make Elias sick to his stomach.

    --

In an art gallery, Elias comes face-to-face with people from his past and is forced to confront his own feelings - both in the past and the present.
