He sees, and is somewhat startled by, the impact of his words. Ivan sways on his feet almost imperceptibly, and in his eyes there is the smallest sliver of passion. Of hatred. Then Till watches Ivan piece himself back together, indifferent and efficient as always.
“That’s the difference between you and me,” Ivan says with vindictive superiority. “I never would have called.”

The hero of humankind, revealed as a hateful, detestful wizard who had been lying to them the whole time. And even though he'd tipped his hand and revealed he had magic, he still hadn't been able to protect them from the wicked wizard that had come to kill them all. He was a failure. He'd let them all down. He'd fallen from the heavens, and Owen had been the one to tear his wings off. And yet. And yet! He'd failed, and yet he'd persisted! He'd tried so hard to protect the humans who were going to hate him now, willing to risk his life for them! Owen had certainly planned on killing him at first, but he was enthralled now. He'd never met a storybook knight in the flesh before.
