“So… welcome to my house.”
Shane clutched his duffel strap to his chest, feeling as nervous as he was sure he looked standing on Cliff Marleau’s doorstep. This was the first time he’d actually been to any of his high school hockey team’s sleepovers, often opting to stay at home or go for an evening at the rink. There were a fair few boys on the team, and having them all in a confined space would be overwhelming. Shane knew that for a fact. It got bad enough in the changing rooms.
Not to say that they didn’t all get along, because they did — they wouldn’t be able to play hockey well if they didn’t. But sometimes they were too much, and Shane didn’t want to be stuck in a room with all of them when things got overwhelming. He preferred to be on his own. And his parents understood that — his mom let him skip the sleepovers so long as he went to the other social events with the team.
Which is why she had been surprised when Shane had announced that he wanted to go to the next sleepover.
