"Ava glanced at Sara. She was sitting there, legs crossed on the bench, hair down and a little messy from the car ride and the long but exhilarating day. She was watching a kid across the pond chasing a duck, their mother quickly scooping them up to rescue the poor creature. Sara just smiled softly and it was like the sunset had sunken not below the horizon but into Ava’s chest, an uncontrollable, radiant warmth spreading through her, coiling around her ribs and making her veins thrum with a bubbling lightness Ava couldn’t explain. Suddenly, she felt like they were 17 again, sitting here just as they always had.
“You know you’re my best friend right?”
Sara blinked, glancing over at her. “Yeah, of course,” she said, voice a little raspy with adoration and confusion. “You’re mine too.”"
