Summary
In a world where magic mostly stays in the background, wizard Eddie Diaz takes one look at firefighter Evan Buckley and concludes that he must be an elf. The evidence eventually proves otherwise, but that only leads Eddie to a new theory. Then another. Buck is accidentally courted, and occasionally kidnapped.

Eddie stopped breathing. The world seemed to pause for a moment.
The firefighter was tall, broad-shouldered, and golden-haired. Sunlight appeared to gather around him. Suddenly birds sang more loudly. The old woman smiled at the golden-haired firefighter admiringly.
Eddie narrowed his eyes.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
There were not many elves left in the cities.

Summary
Eddie's head snapped up. One of the SWAT officers was pointing at a portable monitor set up near the command vehicle—a live feed from the news broadcast still streaming from inside the school. The camera was shaky, the angle awkward, but it showed a hallway.
And there—*there*—was Buck.
Eddie's breath caught in his throat. Buck was in the middle of the corridor, and he was fighting. Not running, not hiding—*fighting*. Hand-to-hand combat with one of the shooters, brutal and desperate. Buck's face was streaked with blood, his shirt torn, but he was moving with the fierce determination of someone protecting something precious.
The camera zoomed in slightly, and Eddie could see it now—the way Buck had positioned himself. The storage closet door visible behind him. The way every move Buck made was calculated to keep the shooter away from that door, to use his body as a barrier.
"The boys," Eddie said, his voice hollow with realisation. "They're in that closet. That's where he hid them. He's—" Eddie's voice broke. "He's protecting them."

Just after his eleventh birthday, Sam Winchester received a letter dropped off by an owl of all things. Harry Potter chose a very important train compartment on his first ride to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There was a small boy sitting alone in the compartment reading, and this boy had on his person three knives and a bottle of holy water. Harry Potter had found his people.
Severus Snape thought he must be extremely unlucky to be the only faculty member at the school who had a muggle landline phone at his summer residence…unlucky, but also so very thankful. Because after countless shocking, concerning, and frankly bizarre calls from one of his students’ guardians each summer, a Dean Winchester, well, Severus’s life was taking on a completely new and welcome direction.
