“Of course, in order to produce heirs, I would need a husband—a king,” she continued, her words slowing. She looked up again, forcing herself to stare right into Link’s eyes.

“I have considered the options, and I feel firmly that you would be the best candidate.”

“Well, we’re here now. We should do what we can to save everyone.”

Zelda nodded along with Link’s words. “You’re right. We’ll need to secure the champions and their Divine Beasts. But the guardians… they will need to be dismantled. They hold a greater threat than the beasts. And… there’s the matter of getting my past self to unlock her sacred power.”

    “And you unlocked yours when…”

“When I acted in love for you,” she finished, meeting his gaze. “We need to get our past selves to realize their feelings.”

“You’re saying we need to play matchmaker.”

    “Yes.”

    “For our past selves.”

    “Yes.”

He dragged a hand down his face. “We’re doomed.”

    ——————
Or: Post-ToTK Link and Zelda, happily married, are investigating a series of disappearances when they’re suddenly sent to before the Calamity. They take it upon themselves to save everyone from impending doom, which includes helping their past selves get along. It’s a lot easier said than done. Oh, and more people are disappearing. There’s that too.

    Summary

Link sneaks Zelda into Castle Town during the Festival of the Goddess, a celebration where everyone wears masks, ensuring her anonymity. Featuring carnival games, carnival food, unabashed flirting and the Princess' Sworn Protector being completely obtuse about feelings.

Most of the very popular places had a large wait, so they travelled down a few back alleys to search out lesser known ones. Zelda lost a bunch of rupees at a place where you had to choose between three chests, until Link finally pulled her away “before you gamble away half the royal treasury.” (She pinched him for the comment). He tried a game of horseshoes, which he failed at spectacularly (“it’s a good thing it’s not the horseshoe that seals the darkness, or we’d really be in trouble”).

    Summary

Zelda said he could ask her anything about his past upon learning how little he remembered. He had asked her only a few questions. What was the point of asking when knowing wouldn’t change anything?

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, the words shooting out of his mouth like air deflating from a balloon. He heard how accusatory his voice was, he knew how unfair the question was, but he couldn’t take back the words, no matter how badly he wanted to. Why would she have told him? When would she have told him? What would she have even said? He frowned in distaste at his own coarseness, a bitterness in his mouth that further upset his appetite.

Zelda opened her mouth to defend herself, eyes damp, but no words came out. It hurt to look at her, so he looked away, blinking hard to try to clear his head.

Her voice came softly, quaking and unsteady. “You didn’t ask.”
