“No relationship is perfect, especially when you have to meet in the middle. But I’m very happy.”
“I gather your Max is not from your world, then?” the reporter gently presses for details.
“Uhm.” Charles looks down at his hands and smiles. His Max. “I’ll just say that… I know how to drive, he knows Aristotle.”

Or: Charles is a F1 driver, Max is doing his PhD at Cambridge. It really shouldn’t work. Somehow, it does.

    Summary

Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses plays when the stranger does step in, maybe a little after 7:30. They've only been officially open for a few moments, so he doesn’t hear the bell jingle, fully immersed with singing along at a low volume.

    “Am I interrupting something?”

Sebastian does not shriek, nor does he screech or scream or whatever you could describe the noise that escaped him. He turns around frantically from where he was setting out pastries, scrambling for his phone to turn the volume down.

“Oh mein Gott.” He breathes, pressing his lips into a thin line. “How’d you get in here so quietly?”

    or
Sebastian might have a small crush on a customer. Maybe he’s trying too hard, opening early, bringing back retired items on the menu. He doesn’t mean to kidnap a kid with said crush in the process.

(There’s no way Sebastian could overlook bruises upon bruises. The real problem is trying to convince Max that he doesn’t have to bear those on his own.)

“I don’t know,” He finds himself staring at another picture. Max is laughing brightly, to the point where his eyes are crinkled, and his mother is smiling too. There is a navy cap on her head: it is a Red Bull cap. Max’s Red Bull cap. “It’s just hard to imagine, I think.”

Pascale looks at him. For a moment it is an odd look. But that quickly melts into a smile. One that is gentle around the eyes, and soft on the mouth. Somehow, it makes Charles feel young again — younger than how he already feels; twenty-one in a world where he is twenty-five.

“You don’t have to imagine it, mon garçon,” she says quietly. “It has already happened.”

    Or,

The last thing Charles remembers is the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix.

    Summary

“Well, nice to meet you officially then, Max,” George says as they step away.

For a brief moment, Max thinks this is it. He’s been unmasked, George knows who he is, finally remembers him. But when he looks up, the man is as surprisingly casual as he’s been since they got out of their cars, no recognition in sight. He sighs in relief, nodding as he watches how George offers his hand.

“Yeah. Nice to meet you, George Russell,” he mutters. He delights in the laughter it earns him, George’s palm warm against his own.

Jos Verstappen had a son. A gifted child, a prodigy, promised to a solid racing career- Until he vanished without a trace. Jos pretends the kid simply didn’t have it in him, lacked the drive, tells whoever will listen the boy bolted away as soon as he could.

Truth is, Max has been drifting aimlessly for years, since his father threw him out the door, and crushed any attempts he’s made to pursue his dream. He goes from place to place, race to race in underground circles, with no goal in sight but the next thrill to come. Until a chance encounter with two-times championship winner George Russell, who’s grown weary of being at the top of his game, changes things.
