“Do you need a ride or anything?” the guy hollered, throwing his hands in the air. Andrew paused, and blinked slowly in response, realizing the man must have figured him out from his shapeless pockets and the empty parking lot they were standing in. Andrew debated his options, either walk to the next town over, which from where they were currently was about an hour walk, or get into the car with this complete stranger. He’d definitely been in better positions than this one. “Fuck it,” he whispered, turning around to face the homeless looking man.
“If I get in, you will only be dropping me off. Don’t expect any bullshit in return,” Andrew stated. “I owe you nothing.”
“Works for me.”

James smirked, leaning against the side of the doorframe, as he said “That I am, Reg. You gonna let me in?”
Regulus opened the door the rest of the way, grabbing James’ wrist and pulling him into the apartment. He crowded James against the door before being pulled into a kiss.

Predictably, Neil’s automated voicemail message answers for him. The number you’re trying to reach is unavailable at this time. The message runs through its spiel, informing Andrew that he can leave a message after the beep.
Goodbye hovers on his tongue. It’s the least that Neil deserves from him. There are so many more things to be said.
Andrew shuts his phone without leaving a voicemail. He drops his phone onto the counter and slips a knife out of its sheath.
Right before spring break during his fourth year at Palmetto, Andrew Minyard attempts suicide. Now everyone has to figure out how to move forward from here.

"Andrew doesn't have friends," Aaron says. Blurts, really—loud and undignified and not what he meant to say. But like a bandaid from a too-fresh wound, it tears him open. "He has things. He just doesn't like that his things"—he makes a maliciously sarcastic set of air quotes—"play nicely together without him."
If Andrew had been carved from marble, he might have been livelier. Every inch of him now is stone, from the hard set of his jaw to the tension bunching in his thighs.
"I'm right, aren't I?" Aaron continues. There's something dangerous in him, howling down every synapse and nerve fiber until he's shaking with it. He doesn't have it in him to leash it; not today, not freshly off the high of a potential future built on want and not binding contracts. "You can't stand that you're not in control anymore, that we might not need you."
"You don't need me," Andrew says, voice gravel.
"Isn't it enough to want you?" Andrew's eyes go wide, but Aaron isn't finished. "Jesus, don't you get it? It's enough for your pet striker, so why can't it be enough for your own goddamn brother?"
