    The owning of "companions," as they were delicately called in polite company, was a time honored tradition among the Penaconian aristocracy, and one that was rarely called into question. Most well-bred Halovians of the upper class had one of their own. Gopher Wood, in his advanced age, had kept many over his lifetime, selling them when age encroached upon the youthful beauty he had purchased them for.

    Now his wards had reached the age when they would need companions of their own. In truth, Sunday was well past the age when it would have been prudent to acquire one, yet he had shown little interest in any fruit Gopher Wood could think to tempt him with.

    “Do you think we can save it?” Al-Haitham asks, none the wiser. “It’s just the roof that’s gone. I would trust you to make the arrangements, senior, if I weren’t so worried you’d bankrupt me.”
    Kaveh does not take the bait, does not bite back at all. Instead, he holds a hand up to an ash-covered wall. His fingers come back stained.
    He wants to say yes. There’s nothing Kaveh wants more than to close his eyes to block out the burnt, blackened view of the house destined to fall. He could imagine it exactly as he left it then: sunlight streaming through the beautifully stained windows. Al-Haitham on the divan, a Kaveh-shaped spot beside him. Not that it would work, even if Kaveh never opened his eyes again. Gods, Kaveh tries, squeezing his eyes shut when the sight becomes unbearable. But the burnt smell permeates the air, inescapable, as the heavy feeling of soot clouds his lungs.
    The house is unlivable.

     

    After the burning of irminsul, Al-Haitham and Kaveh find their house unliveable. Kaveh is totally normal about this. Totally.

    Kaveh doesn’t look up from his full plate. Eyebrows drawn, he mumbles something unintelligible. Alhaitham opens his mouth to press him again, but then Kaveh’s free hand moves into his tousled hair. He brushes the locks behind his ear, but they fall forward anyway.

    Ah. Alhaitham identifies the issue. “You don’t want to eat with hair in your face, is that it?” he asks, eyeing Kaveh’s movements. When Kaveh glares at him, he knows he hit the target, dead center.

    Alhaitham pulls up a chair on Kaveh’s side of the table and sits down. “Turn your head.”

    Alhaitham brushes up on hair braiding skills he left behind with his Akademiya school uniform.

    "Why're you hiding your scent, Alhaitham?" Kaveh watched Alhaitham's nose flare, watched him take in his scent, and wondered how he hadn't noticed sooner, how Alhaitham had managed to keep up such an act for so long.

    Silver brows drew together in confusion. "Because I prefer my living situations peaceful. Not that I have much peace with you present."

    He'd always thought Alhaitham was a beta. Everyone had. His scent was so weak that he hadn't even noticed it, not really. However a strange scent in their home has Kaveh questioning not just Alhaitham but himself as well.
