    Summary

Something, equal parts wariness and weariness, stirs in Olruggio’s eyes whenever Qifrey makes some reference to the future — when he indirectly promises a tomorrow, a next week, an ‘after your commissions are done’. It’s the subtlest thing, a flicker, a spark; someone who knew him less well might not pick up on it. But Qifrey knows Olruggio as well as he knows himself, and he can hardly in good conscience begrudge him his flinch of cynicism. Not when it’s wholly his own fault for having put it there.

Fool you once, shame on me. Fool you twice, still shame on me. Fool you thrice… well, if it’s any consolation whatsoever, I was fooling myself most of all.
    -- -- --
The night Qifrey returns to the atelier for good after his wandering days — old promises kept, new promises made.

    Summary

On the same night Coco receives her first magic book, Olruggio, Qifrey and Agott run into Iguin at the castle festival. Qifrey seizes the chance to pursue the first real lead he’s ever had in his search for the witch connected to his stolen past, leaving a bewildered Olruggio to deal with the fallout when their confrontation turns violent.

In his desperation to protect Qifrey, Olruggio makes a choice that violates the Pact. As a result, he’s summoned to the Great Hall to answer for both his actions and Qifrey’s as Watchful Eye. There, he realizes that for all his principles and desire to help people, those convictions falter when Qifrey is on the line.

Or: Olruggio chooses Qifrey over his duty as Watchful Eye, and Qifrey learns why Olruggio is willing to cross lines for him that he’s never crossed for anyone else.

    "Off to sleep?"

“You said no bedtimes,” Qifrey cried, pointing an accusatory finger at him. “You said!"

“Yes, I did.” A decision Beldaruit was already regretting. “It was just a question.”

    --

Nine-year-old Olruggio and Qifrey have their first sleepover. Beldaruit has feelings. Somehow, they find common ground.

    Summary

She scuffs her feet against the hardwood floors absently and contemplates the 'please knock' sign. Olruggio will certainly not let her in if she knocks, since it’s late and Master Olly is especially exasperated about Agott’s tendency to all-nighters, but Agott needs this mentorship now. It’s probably best to invite herself in.

Probably. Worst case scenario, Olruggio is in the middle of something very important and bothering him topples the whole tower down and Professor Qifrey decides it’s vital that Agott be lectured about respecting space and private time. As if Agott doesn’t understand the concept! Just, sometimes things are emergencies.

Sometimes, one's lover's student needs someone to explain love to her, and that can't wait until after a deadline.
