“Kingsley,” Perrine says, their voice tight with concern. “Start paddling.”
“Huh?” They look up, blinking. “But I’m still eating!”
Ahead, the river seems to bend, its surface no longer smooth but churning, frothing white in places. The channel is more like a gaping maw, studded by fangs of jagged rock ready to snap shut around them. The sound grows louder, a distant roar that vibrates through their ribs.
“Kingsley, start paddling now!”
They must have seen the fear in Perrine’s eyes, or perhaps the reflection of the oncoming whitecaps, because they drop their sandwich to the bottom of the canoe and whip around. “P-Perrine…”
“Paddle, NOW!”
Perrine and Kingsley go canoeing.

But everyone laughs it off, and so do you, and you should have known better. You should have recognized it then for what it is— that familiar itch in the back of your skull that has you warm at the thought of the blood scummed along the bottom of your boot.
You don’t remember. And that, you think distantly, is only half the problem.
