Leah gave a short laugh, but instead of standing, she looked at Fatin, trying her hardest to reframe her. To shove this image between all the other ones she had stored away of her. None of it made sense.
‘I have one more thing.’ she said, lips pursed in thought.
‘One more what?’ The crease deepened on Fatin’s forehead.
‘One more thing I hate about you.’ Leah clarified.
‘Fine, spill.’ her scoff came out uncharacteristically soft.
‘You prove me wrong all the time.’ Leah held her gaze. ‘And I hate being wrong.’
The smile that lit up Fatin’s face made Leah feel just a tiny bit okay with having a panic attack in the freezing backyard of a frat house.

Summary
Varnish, in painting, is applied last. It deepens the colors and unifies the surface so the viewer sees cohesion instead of process. It is what allows a work to survive scrutiny under bright lights. It protects a painting just like public personas protect them. When it thins, truth shows through and the fragile question of whether it survives exposure.
Kate understands this intimately. She builds her life the same way she builds a canvas. Her vulnerability exists only in oils and linen, never in conversation. The world only sees saturation and brilliance. It does not see the underpainting she keeps correcting.
Until someone finally does.
