Ilya knows that before his game, Shane put his right sock on before his left and drank his disgusting green smoothie, and Ilya knows that, win or lose, he will end up curled up in his hotel bed going over game footage, analyzing every move he made. He also knows that through all of this, the weight of a ring will sit on a chain around his neck. Luca glanced sideways at Boodram, who was frozen with one arm in his jacket. It truly would have been hilarious, the way they all watched this scene unfold like a car crash, if it didn’t also feel like one.
They shared a confused glance, turning back when Rozanov’s incredulous “A ride?” rang through the locker room.
“Yeah, I, uh, figured I could use one since I just…quit the Metros,” Hollander said slowly, heaving an exhausted sigh afterwards.
In which Shane Hollander overhears his teammates talking about him before a game and ends up in the Centaurs' locker room, asking Ilya Rozanov for a ride.

His teeth are bared, and Ilya is consumed—not for the first time—by how much he loves Wyatt Hayes and his willingness to commit. From being a brick wall in goal to aiding him with the rescue of his beloved husband, Wyatt has always been there for him. “Looks like it'll be dangerous.”
“Shane has been kidnapped,” he says, as the minivan that Bood drives screeches into the parking lot and another car full of teammates spills out onto the cracked pavement. “Danger is nothing when it comes to saving him.”
OR: Hayden Pike has stolen Shane away. Ilya, and a good amount of the Centaurs, take issue with this.

Refusing to let Ilya ruin his career by signing with Ottawa, Shane chooses to really give their relationship a try and moves to Boston to live with Ilya and become a Raider. What follows is enough public scrutiny and backlash from his team that it has him questioning if he made the right decision. Until moments with Ilya and the Raiders show him exactly why he chose correctly.

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane as he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

Summary
“I am serious, though, you are safe, yes? Drunk at hotel, sitting on balcony, crying over Montreal’s terrible loss?”
It makes sense that Ilya’s mind would go there first. Shane said he was outside. Based on past behavior, the hotel balcony is probably the only place Ilya would expect him to be. He feels a little giddy that he gets to shock him for once.
“I’m at a club, actually.” He has to bite back a self-satisfied smile as he speaks, “With the team. Safe.”
It's quiet for a few moments before Ilya deadpans,
“Very funny joke.”
(or: three days after the breakup with rose, shane gets drunk in boston. it spirals out from there.)
