Newly divorced Eddie Kaspbrak finds out that he, too, can have a little bit of fun.
“I’m not saying you should do anything with him, Eddie,” she hurries to say before he can respond, “But, yeah, do what makes you happy. What makes you happy?”
His friends. Waking up late on weekends. Going to the Farmer’s Market with Bev on Sunday and picking up a pastry to eat for breakfast. Calls with Richie. Watching The Crown. Kissing men who smell of cologne and have a stubble and not thinking it’s wrong afterwards. Ben cooking for him and Beverly when he’s staying over. Those narrow moments where he picks up Richie’s calls with, “Eddie Kaspbrak speaking,” even though he knows it’s Richie, and Richie mocks him so Eddie pretends to get mad. Sushi.
So yeah, maybe Eddie doesn’t like parties, and he thinks too much about the what if’s, and he can’t really pick up the signals when someone’s flirting with him but god, does he want to be happy. And he really wants to feel free. -

this is how things are going, eddie wants to say. i’m in love with my best friend who’s currently in los angeles and dating someone else. actually, i don’t even know whether we’re best friends anymore, since i’ve been avoiding him for months because talking to him knowing i can’t kiss him is fucking difficult. i live in an apartment which doesn’t feel like home and my job is stressing me out and i want to quit but i feel like it’s one of those stable things in my life that my therapist says are good for me. oh yeah, did i mention i’m seeing a therapist to talk about thirty something years of childhood trauma? my ex-wife hates me and her sister says i’ve ruined their lives. and i’m having a sexuality crisis. i don’t know whether i’ve always been gay or i’m bisexual or maybe it’s just you i’ve always been in love with and i have no idea how get rid of this feeling everytime i think about you.

In the span of three months, she told him about her previous jobs (earning an equally sympathetic and frustrated look at the mention of the sexual harassment events), her feelings about Los Angeles (which Eddie mostly agreed with, especially about her low regard for celebrity culture and her enthusiasm for the myriad of healthy food choices), and her taste in TV (“Mh. I’m not much of a comedy guy” Eddie mumbled, after she had told him she had binged on the last season of Derry Girls).
Or, where Eddie is reserved, but needs an assistant.

“Overreact?” Eddie shoots him a disapproving glare. “Ben, he does anything to piss me off. You’ve seen it!”

There's one obvious way to clear Richie's name: pretend the two had been dating all along.
