Summary
When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.

While it might be juicy gossip, who the emotionally unavailable widower of nearly two decades Dr. Jack Abbot is seeing on the sly, he's not the type to be the subject of such fodder. He warrants a sort of respect and awed intimidation from most of the staff that he isn't close with, even though Samira could tell very easily just how warm-hearted and dorky he is most of the time.
Except for right now, when he finally responds to her text with a simple Make sure you charge that tonight, sweetheart. I expect the proof I was promised. I'll be over by 7:30.
The message sends a rush of heat through her body, settling in her nether regions that she can't touch because of him. She could be bratty and say something about how she never technically promised him anything, how it's clearly a comment that he's taken to extreme levels of fantasy fulfillment, but. It's not like she was lying when she said it.
Samira just has a lot of time on her hands when she's not working, okay?

If--when she found him, she would take the next step and make sure they didn’t add more regrets to their ever-growing list.
In space, Phil’s mind kept going back to Melinda and the fact that he never got a chance to say goodbye. "Is she looking for me? Does she think I’m dead?" He wondered. No, he knew that she would never give up on him. He had to find a way to reach out to her and tell her he was alive. Tell her how he felt.
