Blue could almost forget all that had happened last month — the ground shaking beneath her feet in Cabeswater, the dull, expressionless set of Adam’s mouth, the crack through him she’d only gotten a glimpse of. She could almost remember the easy way he’d talked to her before she knew anything at all about Welsh kings, or magic forests, or dreamt ravens. The effect was fleeting, though. There was something in the eyes that refused to be as Blue remembered them, as they’d looked before. A sharpness, or an unanticipated depth, like jumping into murky water and plunging deeper than you thought you would go. It was impossible to tell if he’d changed, or if he’d always been this way, and something had been hiding it before.

Amanda lowered her eyes to her lap. She thought of reaching a hand to the back of Rowan’s neck and touching the fine, bristly edges of her hair, of running her hand down the crown of her head to the yoke of her shoulders, like soothing an animal. Would Rowan want that from her? Tolerate it? It was one thing when she was happy, a contented creature safe in her own kingdom, and another entirely when she was like this, tired and waterlogged with sadness. Rowan had never seemed the type to seek comfort from other people. Company, or destruction. But not comfort. There had been a time not so long ago when Amanda would have been capable of ignoring this, but now she knew that there was some part of Rowan that matched some part of herself, and she couldn’t unknow it, couldn’t look at her and not see it there.
