Henry is widely known as a fierce warrior, and lending hand to any in need. A knight through and through to all who have met him. Hanush of Leipa is thrilled to have his presence in Rattay again, let alone in charge of his indolent nephew. His hopes are that Henry’s influence will rub off on his heir. Hans’s hopes is that he will piss Sir Henry off enough that he leaves Rattay within a fortnight.

Hans’s jaw sets as he works around his next words. “Maybe,” he starts, “all I need to do is get my head out of my own arse to be even a semblance of capable tomorrow in front of Jobst and his companions.” Henry blinks at the admittance, but says nothing.
It grows quiet again, Henry staring at Hans’ lithe form stretched along the bed, his brow still furrowed as he, undoubtedly, crowds his mind with thoughts of self-hatred. Sometimes it shocks Henry still, how similar they are at the end of the day.
“What was she like?” he asks, and the suddenness causes Hans to react, snapping him from his thoughts. He stares at Henry, and the older knight repeats his question, “The bath maid - what was she like?”

Hans' mouth stayed open a beat too long before shutting, he looked away sharply.
Henry’s voice stayed low, steady. “And what do you think we’ll be if we do run? Do you honestly think they’ll just let us vanish?”
Hans went still. Something flickered in his eyes. Hurt and humiliation, quickly masked by fury.
“You’ll lose everything,” Henry went on. “And for what? A hovel on the road? A boot in your ribs from the first man who thinks you’re lying about your blood?”
Hans' jaw tightened.
“You remember Trosky,” Henry added. “How they treated you when they thought you were no one. Do you really think you’d survive that twice?”

“I missed you,” he murmured, closing his eyes to relish the warmth of his sons coos muffled against his chest.
Jitka hummed and kissed his cheek.
Hans looked back to Henry, who had lifted Henerich effortlessly onto his lap and was helping him re-buckle the strap of a too-large scabbard.
A dangerous, unspoken longing burned in his chest. He swallowed hard abasing it, the truth curling behind his ribs like a secret too sacred to speak aloud. His family was whole, but not yet complete. One piece was still missing, the one thing Henry had never asked for, and Hans had never dared to offer.

Or they’ve just never met Henry.
Each time Hans cannot see him, the walls of the world start closing in, threatening to crush him. Each time Henry is away, the young lord has to face the terrifying reality of longing, craving, dreaming, yearning—and the frustration of not knowing whether the blacksmith’s boy is even alive. Worse! The frustration of not knowing whether the bastard misses him as bad as Hans does.
And then, each time Henry returns to him, two crucial things dawn upon Capon’s head: one, he needs to remember there are books that speak of love he dares not voice himself. Two: he might not agree with absence making the heart fonder, but it sure does make his cock ache.

She flushed deeper, her gaze dropping for a moment before flicking back up, equal parts amused and scandalized. “I assumed you were simply gifted.”
He gave her a crooked smile, something tender and wicked glinting behind it. “I was not. Not until Henry.”
Jitka’s eyes widened, a soft gasp caught between a laugh and disbelief.
“No,” she whispered, incredulous.
“Oh yes.”

As the knight promised to teach Henry the very basics of the fencing craft: the deeply-rooted idea that sometimes you need to learn how to yield into the other warrior's masterful charge.
