Summary
“I mean, I guess I deserve it.” They brought their hand behind their neck. “I've been messing with you for as long as I can remember. Gotta say though, this is pretty mean for a prank.”
“What? Prank? Wait, Kris-”
“Like, I've gotten this literally beaten into me, I still get headaches from looking at wiffle bats, but there’s just stuff you shouldn’t joke about. Love is definitely one of them.”
“Kris.”
They turned to her and forced a smile, raising four fingers. “Four out of ten. The letter was a pretty good set up, the lake’s a good location, and you get points for the absurdity, but this is pretty mean.”
“Kris!”
“Hm?”
“I’m? Not joking???” She said with a baffled expression. “I’m being serious here?”
(Or, in which Noelle confesses to Kris, and Kris is not very good at handling confessions.)

Summary
She peered over at him. “Shut the door.”
Jax was staring at her in a way she wasn’t sure she’d seen before. His expression was so … open. It was the only word that came to mind. He seemed both apprehensive and prepared to absorb whatever she threw at him at the same time.
Maybe that meant his guard was up—but he did as she asked, anyway, putting a hand on the door and pushing until it shut with a click.
(Or: Pomni attends Zooble and Gangle's marriage reception, and Jax takes her home after.)

Summary
“You weren’t Kris yesterday in that city, were you? And you’re not Kris now.” Despite their heaves of breath, Kris still wore the eerie dead eyed expression on their face. It was different from the one they had when they first moved to Hometown—that one, although was their default, often molded and changed into normal expressions of joy and fear, sorrow and mischief. This new face that sat in Kris’ skin was as robotic as it was uncanny, and they moved like old claymation, staggering and jerky.
“But you were Kris last night. So how do I find Kris again?”
or: Noelle is going to get her friend back, even if she has to claw it out of them.

Summary
They feel the urge to kiss her rise like bile, like a foreign thing. They have dreamed about this moment for years, but now they feel sick for want of it, helpless to stop it. Please don’t do this, they think, watching their hands rise to her cradle her face.
WHY? it asks. DON’T YOU WANT TO KISS HER, TOO?
(or: the same room, a different path, and a possession.)
