“Yup,” Shane says. The cop starts to lead him to the car. He doesn’t bother to put up a fight. Just turns to J.J. and says in French, “I’ve been under the security camera since I called Hayden. It should have picked everything up.”
“Self-defense, then, and you can prove it. Yes?”
If the cop hadn’t closed the door then, Shane might even have responded: and I don’t have a scratch on me.
Or: After the fanmail video, but before Shane transfers to Ottawa, a group of guys sees Shane walking alone and decides to do something about it. It doesn’t go particularly well for them.

In his kitchen, Shane is in the middle of cooking something. There is a look of concentration on his freckled face. Sunlight is painting a picture Ilya wants to deposit somewhere safe.
(Alzheimer’s is highly heritable. Towards the end, his father seemed to hold on to less and less of what made him the person he was. How do you know which memories to keep and which to throw away? How can he keep this one?)
OR: There is a slight delay in Ilya's arriving at the cottage. But they get there, eventually.

Summary
Shane Hollander was the most beautiful thing Ilya had ever laid his eyes upon. There were freckles all over his cheeks and the bridge of his nose that looked impossibly straight for a professional hockey player.
He was toned, broad-shouldered and carried himself in a way that professional athletes tend to do: conscious of his every move.
