Summary
Shane travels 493 kilometers to say sorry even if Ilya doesn't forgive him. He needs to say it, he needs to see Ilya one more time.
By the time he arrives, he is tired, anxious and something hurts (emotionally and physically).At 1:50 in the morning, he enters the security code, which thankfully Ilya hasn't changed in months.
At 2:00 he knocks forcefully on the man's door.
It's 2:40 in the morning when Shane begins to recite the words he's practiced so much in Montreal.
and by 6:00 am he has a baby in his arms and a love confession from Ilya.

Shane travels from Montreal to Boston to say sorry to Ilya. He arrives with an apology and leaves (metaphorically) with a surprise baby. One or two love confessions later an a marriage proposal, Shane and Ilya finds their place in each other arms. Now they just have to face the world, but that's easier, so much easier than admitting their feelings.

Ilya’s hand found Shane’s shoulder just as it had found hers. It turned over Shane’s limp body just as it had turned hers over, tears of fear building up in his eyes as the body flopped over onto its back. He wanted to see Shane, but all he could see was her. All he could see were her open eyes, rolled so far up into the back of her head that he couldn’t even see the blue of her irises anymore. All he could see was haunting white, sunken in cheeks, deathly gray skin. And the vomit. Oh, the fucking vomit. It was leaking out of his mother’s mouth and down the side of her face, causing a chunk of golden blonde hair to be plastered to her cheek. It was pink and frothy, running down her neck and soaking into her nightgown and the mattress below her, and it was speckled with red. With blood. With her blood. That’s when the scream had escaped him.

Summary
Ilya didn’t think when the ball dropped back in January that 2017 would be a year of firsts. He was well established in Boston with a team he was hell bent on taking through the playoffs. He had friends he liked well enough and a home he enjoyed. With Shane Hollander dating Rose Landry it seemed like he would be relegated to months of picking up women at bars. Did it matter that those women would probably have dark hair and freckles?

Then the All Star Game happened. Shane showed up in his stylist’s picked clothes and a new confidence he never expected. He forced them to talk about feelings and held him while he cried about Russia and his family. He hadn’t let himself cry like that in years, let alone have someone witness that type of breakdown.
He hadn’t felt comfortable in someone’s arms like that since his mother died.
After that the firsts kept coming.
Or, Ilya Rozanov finally makes it to Shane Hollander's apartment. It only took eight years and a life changing two weeks in a cottage by a lake to make it happen.
