Summary
Everyone is drifting in the aftermath of Bobby’s death. In the midst of the grief and chaos, Buck plants his feet and becomes a pillar—the one holding everyone else up. They're grateful, of course, but they can’t shake the feeling that he’s being left to carry it all alone.

Buck has someone—someone who’s there for the quiet, painful moments no one else sees. It just takes the rest of them a little while to figure out who.

“More than you know,” Tommy says, leaning over to kiss his temple. “We don’t have to.”
“I want to,” Buck says quickly.
Tommy’s gaze goes soft, and his smile is so fond and so proud that any doubts Buck feels just slip away for a moment.

Chimney’s chair creaks. Buck cranes his head over the back of the couch and watches him straighten up, pop his back, close the folder.
“You only ever ask me weird questions,” he says, and then crosses the loft to sit in one of the armchairs. He levels Buck with a look that’s way too knowing for the amount of words they’ve exchanged. “What’s up?”
He takes a breath.
“What does it feel like to be a dad?”

Dorset gestures out towards the dance floor, inclining his head towards Kate in a questioning manner. “Is he asking her to dance?” Anthony asks incredulously before his ears register the strains of the violins warming up for the next set. “To a waltz?”
“Bad ton,” Colin singsongs.
Hang Colin, and hang the queen, too. Anthony goes charging across the ballroom.

Eddie’s been back at work for about two weeks—his time after quitting had passed in a seemingly idyllic week of spending time with his son which got rudely interrupted by a full-scale mental breakdown that ended with tears and hugs and Buck lovingly bullying him into going to therapy again. Then therapy had brought even more tears and confusion and slowly ballooning financial concerns that culminated in Eddie undertaking the frankly painful process of reapplying to the LAFD and completing an equally painful remedial training course.
And everything was fine until—Eddie started having a problem.

Buck doesn’t think that if he were to say, “I’m in a bad place”, that anyone would turn him away. Really, he doesn’t. The 118 has too many good, kind people for that.
But every time he wants to open his mouth, to say something, to reach out to Eddie or Bobby or Hen or Chim, he hears Eddie yelling, “you’re exhausting.”

except, as it turns out, falling apart happens in increments, and healing does, too: it happens when you gnaw a hole in your lip trying to keep quiet only to have the words escape; when you realize that the ghost you've been seeing out of the corner of your eye is yourself; when your best friend smiles, and you allow it to take your breath away.
it happens through the smallest of things: bird feeders, and cacti, and pasta shapes.
