So. Martin isn't expecting anything to happen. But then, one day, something...does happen. It happens when Martin is passing Jon in the hall, and stops to ask how he’s doing, because Jon always looks a little bit like hell these days, and it makes Martin feel like he has to do something, and useless small talk is pretty much all he can do, so that’s what he does. And instead of grunting or shrugging or mumbling something dismissive, Jon replies, with perfect, involuntary clarity, "Every part of me aches, and I would just about kill to have someone rub my shoulders right now."
There's a positively deafening silence as they both come to grips with this unprecedented turn of events. Then they both start talking at once.
"Ah," says Jon.
"Wow," says Martin, at the same time.

Martin then immediately regrets asking such a vague question of the most pedantic man on Earth, because he can see the way Jon's eyes glaze over as his imagination goes into overdrive. "I meant anything that's actually likely to come up, Jon."
Jon visibly reels it back in. "Um, I don't think so. Unless you're harboring a secret desire to drink my blood, or something."

"You know." And, okay, glancing meaningfully down in the direction of Jon’s crotch was probably not the most graceful way to express that sentiment, now that Martin thinks about it. It looks like it did the trick, though, judging by the way Jon’s eyes widen, after a brief delay.
"Oh. Oh!" Jon actually has the nerve to look a bit sheepish, as if he hadn't been getting very well-acquainted with Martin’s thigh mere moments ago. Then he gives Martin a look of plaintive confusion. "...why, though?"

“They say lying down with your eyes closed can be restful, even if you don’t sleep,” Martin said, in that pointed way he does when he wants Jon to learn to take care of himself but doesn’t want to outright say it.
“I know,” Jon said. He did not say that, if he lay down and closed his eyes, he likely wouldn’t have much trouble falling asleep at all.
He just wouldn’t … stay asleep. Best to avoid that inevitability as long as possible, he’s decided.

Somewhere else, Jon is free of statement giver nightmares but plagued by new and horrible nightmares that are all his own, focused around his own traumas. The first time he wakes up, seven years after arriving somewhere else, and realizes he didn't dream the night before is, understandably, an emotional experience.
