Summary
A sound must have spilled out of her, because she heard John soothe her with a hand on her shoulder, the warmth of his skin shocking her a little. Her ankle bumped against the edge, and she grimaced and pushed herself up to a sitting position.
“What are we doing this for again?”
Her voice was irritating even to her own ears, petulant and childish. She knew that it was bothering John too- something had changed between them in the recent few weeks, both of them knew, and this had seemed to be an attempt to fix that rift.
If John was annoyed though, his face didn’t show it. He was as serene as ever, above it all. For a moment, Amanda had the urge to wipe that peace off his face, to make him feel something, anything. Sometimes she felt like she was going insane, like she was some sort of animal that John had to constantly look after and temper her emotional outbursts.
“It’s important that we leave your old life behind.”

Summary
The clanging tones of his ringtone broke the relative silence in the apartment, and he wiped grease on his jeans roughly before fumbling for the answer button.
“It’s my evening off, Mandy.”
A sharp laugh, more of a snort than anything. “Sorry, a life of crime doesn’t really come with paid leave.”
Adam groaned, starting to get to his feet and ignoring the stiffness in his leg. The shackle had rubbed it raw, nearly damaging some nerves according to the doctor- the limp had taken a while to get used to but had eventually turned into more of an annoyance than anything.
“Come on princess, there’s some cash in it for you.”

Summary
The question was followed by a silence that was just icier than Lawrence was anticipating, and after a moment it fractured- boiled over like a pot left on the heat too long.
“If you’re going to-” Adam bit off his words angrily, and slammed the knife down on the counter. “You can’t keep fucking doing this, Lawrence.”
“Doing what?” The words came out almost mechanically and when Lawrence took a step forward, Adam stepped back. Something like fear lodged itself in his chest.

Summary
The first time Lawrence had seen Amanda Young, his head had been too fuzzy from pain and percocet to take much note of her, if he was being honest. She kept to herself- if he had become John’s prize show dog, then she was a little lap-thing, preeing at his praise and licking her wounds in private when she had to. The only time he ever seemed to see her was when a game was about to begin, and she tended to focus only on John anyway. That was fine with him- he hadn’t felt much like talking to anyone.

Summary
Neil Josten hated the smell of hospitals.
Even underneath the surface level dislike for the sharp, clinging smell of disinfectant there were the dregs of that same old anxious panic that his mother had drilled into him- hospitals meant tests, records, traceability. Even now, he had to fight the urge to leave with every step that carried him down the hallway.
It was a different fear, though, that stopped him short in front of the door.

Summary
Lawrence meets Logan first.
It isn’t an instant connection, by any means--both of them are far too reserved for that--but they get along well enough, in a polite, circumstantial sort of way. Lawrence is certainly the only father in the figure skating parent group, and though Logan isn’t the only father of a youth hockey player, his daughter is one of the few girls out there, setting him apart from the crowd. They both keep to themselves, for the most part, until Diana and Melissa make fast friends during the gap time between their respective lessons about 2 weeks into their programs.
And really, it's all upwards from there.

It was obvious to Adam that he had no idea what else to say, but he still mustered up his best ‘Really?’ look, eyebrows raised to his hairline, lips pressed into a thin, unimpressed line
