Hu Tao was merely the latest such adoptee. She came from a long line of funeral directors[...] and had become an orphan and Vision user at age eleven. Not long after, Rex Lapis—who had been helping care for her—made the critical error of seeking Cloud Retainer’s advice on dealing with children. By the end of that night, Cloud Retainer had kidnapped Hu Tao from Liyue Harbour and was teaching her the basics of Adeptal arts.

As a young Archon, Mavuika had promised five hundred years ago that she will dedicate her life to resisting the Abyss. Yet, she was only fooling herself—she couldn't even resist the temptation to pull Skirk into an embrace. In her defense, it wasn't as if Skirk was putting up a fight.
However, that was perhaps why Skirk and Mavuika understood one another so quickly back then.

Skirk presses herself against his chest and shoves the wrist of her other arm into his mouth. 'Bite,' she commands, and he does. He sinks his teeth into this manifestation of the abyss, feeling its bitterness, its coldness on his tongue. White flashes before his eyes and he whines like an injured dog. Skirk is sealing his arm back into place, her fingernails digging into his tender skin, hushing him with the same mechanical efficiency.
