For some reason, today, this blatant thing felt less bearable than usual. More like the water than like hanging, not at all like getting tossed off a stage. Helly had now experienced a growing list of hurts, and they were all different. The one about Miss Casey and Mark’s outie felt like the numbers 6 through 11 had, that one time. They felt like an expensive bathroom mirror, with her hair tied up, like being sorry.

Her fists against his front door, or maybe his chest. Telling him he was a coward for running away from whatever it was up here that kept them trapped in a waking nightmare. That he was weak and selfish and cruel. That he had to give him back to her.

"No chauffeur today?" he asks. "You’ve changed, Helena." The way he says her name makes her toes curl inside her shoes. So different from his voice down on the severed floor and in the tent; it had been desperate and cracking like a little boy's, each word buoyant. Now he just sounds pissed. "Nice parking job, by the way."
"I would’ve parked in the driveway, but your sports cars were in the way."
