“Does Grace have soulmate, question? Grace said he had no mate.”
Grace lets out a small—albeit a little sad—chuckle. “I’m pretty sure I don’t have one.”
“What?!” Rock screeches.
Grace flinches back a bit from the noise. At least Rocky has the gall to look a little sympathetic after his outburst.
“Apology apology apology, just confused.”
Grace nods in agreement. “I’m not too sure about it either, buddy, but people used to look down on me for it– no, not down,” he thinks, trying his best to pull at any other memories soulmate related of his that are willing to come to the surface of his mind, “They looked at me with pity,” He trails off.
“No no no. Not right. Grace have soulmate, surely.”
Grace laughs and shakes his head. “At this point, I hope I don’t have one. Imagine having the other half of you shot up into space before you could even meet them. I wouldn’t want to do that to them.”
“But Grace go home now, Grace find mate!”

Summary
The arrival at Erid is a momentous occasion. Rocky is excited and thrilled. Ryland is overwhelmed. But the reunion is happy, beautiful, amazing.
Or that's what it should have been. Except Rocky gets hurt, Ryland is left to try and communicate with an alien planet, and everyone is scrambling to figure out how to do this. To Grace, this is incredible but also bittersweet - he got Rocky home safely with the taumoeba, now he just gets... to starve. To Erid, this is insane - how did Rocky show up in an alien spaceship with a child???

Ryland Grace is stuck trying to speak Eridian, immediately makes himself sound like a child, and Rocky's world and family scramble to help this strange pebble. Misunderstandings galore, alongside hurt/comfort and angst and fluff.

Why can't he see? There's just this nothingness as far as he can perceive. No shapes dance in the darkness, as if he had simply had his eyelids glued shut. In fact, he can't feel that he even has eyelids. His body is numb. He can only feel the plushness of the mattress by how it cradles his body— There's no sensation other than pressure. Not the smooth texture of his sheets, the soft backing of his quilt. Nothing.
He tries to move again. An arm, this time. Lifting it feels decidedly wrong. His musculature is all messed up. It doesn't rise from his shoulder. It feels more like it comes from his flank— and there's the heavy issue, again. It feels like someone strapped lead weights to him. Adrian’s below us. A beautiful swirl of greens. With a view like that, I can only stay a little mad at it with the little “almost killed us” fiasco. Unfamiliar constellations and the arm of the Milky Way fill the rest of my view. I start panning my view closer to Tau Ceti when I spot it.

Ryland scrambles upright and jams an accusing finger in Rocky and Adrian’s directions. “You want to Avatar me into an Eridian body!?”
“No, silly Grace.” Adrian replies cooly, with the Eridian tonal equivalent of an eyeroll, “We want to Avatar ourselves into human bodies."Grace is yearning for a real, human touch, on a planet where the atmosphere will kill him. Luckily, Rocky and Adrian aren't ones to give up, even on a problem as seemingly impossible as this.
