When he is feeling particularly sadomasochistic, he pays Shi Qingxuan’s grave a visit. These, he remembers most distinctly.
He and the grave commune in silence: He Xuan glares, the grave is unmoved. In the third century, he glares, but he sweeps the plot of dirt too, especially when the heavens are wrapped up in one thing or another and no one else has stopped by in a while. In the fourth, he brings flowers. He doesn’t know anything about flowers. He resides over death, not the princesses of life. So he picks colorful, sprightly bouquets, ones he thinks Shi Qingxuan might’ve liked. In the fifth, he is struck by revelation: he glares with renewed intensity at the wooden marker erected over Shi Qingxuan’s grave, and he says, “Hello.”
He Xuan learns the interminable length of a lifetime.

In the center of it all is a man…
A man who is scrambling around a small convection oven on the counter, trying to scrape out the blackened remains of what Hua Cheng assumes were once cookies. He appears to be in his early thirties and, despite his frantic movements and creased expression, the first word that comes to Hua Cheng’s mind is: soft.
His hair, a beautiful, earthy chestnut brown color, is pulled back into a loose bun on the top of his head. A few strands hang free, framing his face. He wears cuffed jeans and a cream-colored turtle-neck sweater that swamps his frame and falls down to his thighs, giving him a cozy, shapeless figure.
