“Don’t move,” she muttered, even though he wasn’t.
The house was so quiet she could hear the faint ticking of the kitchen clock between the fridge’s hum. The air from the open back door drifted through in soft pockets, cool against the sweat at her hairline.
His hand moved the first time so slowly she almost didn’t notice. Just lifted off his knee and settled lightly against her side, not even gripping, just there. She kept pressing the towel under his nose, jaw tight.
The second time, it slid lower, palm flattening warm over the soft strip of skin between where her tank top ended and her shorts began. Just a hand, heavy and splayed, the heel of it against her stomach. Not pushing, not holding her there. Just there.
She thought about knocking it away. Her whole body went tense like a cat about to jump, but she didn’t. She told herself she didn’t want to drop the towel, didn’t want blood everywhere. That was all.
