She’d been thinking about those words for far longer than a lady of good breeding would care to admit—then again, she’d never belonged in civilized society.
She’d thought of Sandokan, running his large hands across her pristine skin; she visualized the deep yearning in his eyes as he slowly peeled off each layer of cloth to bare her naked flesh—he would be patient with her despite the longing of his own lust. She ached to give herself to him in the promises of marriage.

Summary
They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Summary
This was not the face of a bad morning.
Something, or someone, had completely smothered Mel's spark.
All of Frank’s priorities reshuffled in an instant. Everyone in this hospital was an idiot if they didn't realize how great of a doctor she was, and how vital it was to keep her from burning out.
Frank attempted a smile. He waved, bracelet rustling on his wrist, feet glued to his spot across the room.
Mel removed a hand from her pocket to wave back at him, cocking her head to the side and squinting, as if he was a mirage in the desert.
No broad smile, and certainly not an ecstatic “You're here!” like last time, something he'd secretly craved. But it was something. Acknowledgement that she didn't hate him, at least.
