She had been so normal for the past few days. And Mira and Zoey hadn’t freaked out about her being a half-demon—not after the Idol Awards incident, at least. Which was promising!
Sure, she had accidentally snuck up on Zoey with her too-light footsteps yesterday, making her spill chips all over the couch. And then Zoey got really quiet and just stared at her for an uncomfortably long moment after Rumi flashed her a sympathetic smile. Which was odd.
Sure, Mira had been looking at Rumi’s hands a lot, like she was expecting to see claws again, but Rumi tried to not let that get to her head!

Mira hums, turning the bottle of peach soju around in her hands to continue picking at the label. "What's that?"
Zoey's laughter fills the space between them. It's always a little different when she's tipsy — more melodic and unrestrained, like she can't quite stop the sound from bubbling up her throat. It has a way of pulling at Mira's heartstrings and activating those butterflies that slumber against her ribs.
"That I was madly in love with you for…" Her laugh turns bitter before it tapers off into a sigh, "God, so many fucking years."

Rumi shrugs, feeling raw and exposed in the way she always does after kneeling for them.
She considers the question: she just wasn’t brought up that way. There was never any need for praise or affirmation as a form of encouragement. Not when there were other forms so readily available – imminent choking forms, creeping steadily across her body.
