“The fuck was that for?” he asks, and I genuinely splutter for a few moments before the words come to me.
“What do you mean, what was that for?! I should be asking you that!”
“Can a guy not do experiments on his alien friend?”
I glare, still rubbing the ache from my leg. He hit me harder than necessary, I just know it. We’ve spent enough time together for him to know exactly which touches and pressures are comfortable. It’s beyond me how he can still look ashamed every time he catches a glimpse of the scars on my left side but then go on to be an absolute nuisance to me every chance he gets.
“You’re not a guy,” I tell him, “and no, hitting me is not an experiment.”

Summary
“I wonder how things would be if we’d evolved on the same planet,” Grace says, leaning his forearms on his elevated knee. The one kept up by Rocky’s body. It puts even more weight on him, and Rocky feels the texture of Grace’s shoe through the xenonite, the bumps and ridges, the rocks and leaves stuck to the bottom. “You think we’d eat each other?”
It takes every ounce of self control for Rocky to keep the noise he makes somewhat dignified. He kind of needs Grace to stop talking.

Summary
I never noticed. There are no mirrors in my house; there are no mirrors anywhere on Erid, at least not in the sense that we understand them. There’s reflective surfaces, but not intentionally so. My attention has been tugged this way and that, always something new to discover, or else something new to research in the endless encyclopedia I was left with. I had no reason to look at my own body beyond what was necessary to keep it clean.
But now I’m sitting here, and it stares me in the face. Emphasized by my position, my stomach rises up and over my waistband, forming a soft mass that spills slightly over my sides.
“Oh,” I say out loud. I run a hand over this new pudge that probably isn’t new at all, startling slightly at the texture of it. Soft. Yielding. Slightly cold from the water evaporating on it. I touch my body like it isn’t my own, because for a long, long time, it wasn’t. I touch it the way Rocky touched me once he finally had the option to, committing everything to memory, matching it to what he already knew.

Or: In the two years that he spent on Erid, Grace has changed in just about every way imaginable. But one way in particular feels more significant than the rest.

It’s obscene in a way that has no human equivalent. I think seeing human genitals on him would’ve shocked me less, because at least that’s something you might reasonably show to another person. But this, the place that is both mouth and everything else to him, that I’ve seen exactly once and then never again because it’s viewed as so private and intimate that even an Eridian’s mate does not get to see—that’s something else. The only time he would reveal himself like this to someone else would be to lay an egg, and even then it would be something you don't draw attention to, something necessary but shameful.
And now he’s showing me.
Not only that, he’s offering.

Hear you heart right up close, noisy, alive. I would prefer.”

Odysseus fights Zeus for his and his crew's lives and wins. Skipping over Calypso's island, he gets to return home to Ithaca with thirty-six others. Things are fine. It’s over.
And yet, he can’t help but wait for the other shoe to drop, anxiously anticipating disaster. Overwhelmed by his fear and unable to live with the uncertainty, he goes and seeks it out himself just to get it over with.
He gets more than he bargained for, and learns some things about himself on the way.
