“You’ve got Soul Scars!” Professor Clover says, smiling as he helps to massage a salve over the fresh ink. Robin’s skin burns, red and puffy along the edges of the sudden design that has etched itself over her flesh. The totality of the tattoos over the child’s pudgy limbs looks unnatural, uncanny. She asks for elaboration and is given a stack of books to feed her curiosity. “Soul Scars,” her instructor continues, bandaging her wrists to ease the pain, “are a sign that you exist in a dyad within countless lifetimes and universes. A pair. A soulmate, some may call it. Somewhere out there in the great wide world is your counter. When that bond is strong, the scars from one soul are inked onto the other soul as well.
