Summary
Eddie braced himself against the table, “what are you saying” he looked back and forth between his parents.
“I have a cousin, Raymond, he runs a ranch in Montana. He’s looking for some help this summer and I said that you were available” his mother said, as if it was a fun summer camp they were sending him too for a few weeks.
“You’re sending me to Montana?” Eddie cried, “why? For hanging out with my friends”
“You know why Edmundo,” his mother said coldly.
Or: The summer after high school, Eddie Diaz was sent to a ranch in Montana to "learn to be a real man". There he meets another lost teenager named Evan. The decisions he makes, and the relationships he enters, will haunt him for the rest of his life.

“If I let go of her you’re going to kill me! You’re going to experiment on me like she tried to do”
His voice is hysterical, his eyes are shifting around the room, looking through the windows. It's clear he can see McKay and Whittaker, who look ashen and worried, peering in through the window Garcia was just at. She tries to get into his headspace, understanding things from his delusion—that there’s a bunch of doctors he doesn’t recognize crowding a room, waiting to experiment on him; but then her eyes get stuck on Trinity’s limp form, chest sticking out, hair pulled up, scalpel to her neck and this white hot anger takes over any thought, compassion, or empathy. She wants nothing more than to burst through that door and beat the man off of her girlfriend.

A patient has a psych break and knocks Trinity unconscious, barricading himself into Central 6. Yolanda, Robby, Dana, and Whittaker are forced to watch helplessly as the patient holds her hostage. I dive into each of their headspaces throughout the piece, as they each come to realize how much they love and care for the now unconscious resident.

Summary
Memory can be funny like that. Trinity looks at her and remembers the Yolanda from months ago, sat across from her with a drink in hand, their knees brushing every time one of them leaned in to say something. The dim lighting of the bar had softened her eyes, painting her face into an expression that could almost be mistaken for the same longing that echoed inside Trinity’s chest.
A lot can change in ten months. Not all of it for the better.
Or: It happens in increments, like all the worst things do.

Summary
“Holy shit.” Ogilvie’s voice startles her back to reality; he’s suddenly paused, jaw a little slack.
Maybe he’ll faint, like Javadi’s first day.
She almost smiles at the thought— until her eyes lock onto the cause of his momentary shock. There’s a definite proximal tibia shaft fracture, bone jutting right out, but that’s not it. Her eyes drift further up the leg, to the upper thigh, where cuts litter the skin. Trinity feels her own thigh itch; scar tissue is sensitive, and it doesn’t help when she’s actively thinking about them and overheating under her scrubs.
“Not what’s important right now.” Thank fucking god for Samira. Trinity nods, focusing on the swelling lower down instead. That’s what needs immediate attention.

“Like, what if I can’t do this? What if I just can’t fucking do this.”
Garcia doesn’t know what to say so she puts a light hand on Santos’s back, and when she doesn’t reject the touch, Garcia starts to move it up and down and up and down, slow and steady and gentle as she closes the distance between their chairs and leans in close so she can keep her voice low.
“Trinity,” she murmurs, “we both know that’s not true.”
Santos shakes her head again and chokes out an empty laugh. “Fuck off,” she manages, but without any bite behind it, and her bouncing knee is starting to lose steam.
“Make me,” Garcia replies without missing a beat.

Summary
“I know you mentioned a raincheck,” Santos begins, and then she gets a little lost.
(She has the next words ready.
She’s been practicing them in her head for the last few minutes.
Still, they’re caught in her throat like a sip of water going down the wrong pipe.)
But Garcia is patient.
So unbelievably fucking patient.
"But I don’t—want to be alone,” Santos admits with a slight grimace, trying to sound chill and casual even though this isn’t chill and casual at all. But her voice comes out audibly strained because that was just enough of a lie to make her squeeze her eyes shut and bite her bottom lip way too hard. “I probably shouldn’t be alone tonight,” she corrects with what little air is left in her lungs.
“Okay,” Garcia says, simple and gentle and effortless, and nods toward the passenger side. “Get in.”

Summary
Things have been good, lately.
Trinity has been good. She likes going to work—likes the thrill of particularly difficult cases, likes the easy back-and-forth she’s starting to build with her coworkers, even likes arguing with Langdon. She likes her little apartment and she likes that she gets to share it with Dennis. (It’s way cleaner, now, and she eats real food half the time. And she has something to do in the evenings other than think about everything she’s lost).
Things have been good.
She should’ve fucking known what would happen if she let her guard down.
~~~
Trinity is cornered on her way home from work. She gets out of it with a stab wound and a whole new wave of old trauma. (And of course, her least favorite coworker is the only one there to talk her down.)
Summary
Trinity glances back at the creak of the door opening. Ah, great. It’s Langdon. Who looks about as unhappy to be here as she is to see him.
“Here to convince me to jump?” Trinity asks, turning back to the skyline. The sun has long-set, but the city is practically one big night light. Probably makes for an ugly smudge of yellow from space.
“Not ideally,” Langdon says, face twisting a bit as he awkwardly steps through the roof railing. Trinity’s pretty sure he knows not to touch her, but she shifts a couple inches further away anyway.
A strange Trinity & Langdon conversation on the roof after a difficult shift.
Summary
This has to be a nightmare, Langdon examining her for damage, Langdon sure to come up a winner because she’s all scratched up and wrecked, completely annihilated, no good to anyone. “Stop,” Santos says, trying to glare past that winking pen light.
He flicks her a cool, dispassionate look and keeps drawing a line with his finger for her to follow with her eyes. “If this was Whitaker presenting in the ER with a, sorry— you obviously prefer bluntness, right?— a really messed up face, definite signs of concussion, road rash, the whole freaking works… how would you proceed?”
Santos thinks of Whitaker putting his hand in vague proximity to her face without ever once making physical contact, his voice all cloudy with emotion as he tried to talk to her. “I’d send Whitaker and that fuck ass mullet for a head CT,” she cannot help but choke out.
“Okay. That’s how we’ll start. You got an emergency contact? Someone we can call to be here with you right now?”
“Whitaker.” Now his face dips to impatience. Huckleberry is pulling his shift right now, clearly busy. Santos straightens her shoulders and tries not to splinter under the pain. “Call Ellis, okay?”
Summary
“Uh… Langdon,” she calls, going for the first person she catches sight of. He likes Mel. “A word?”
“Is it fast, because I have two patients who are getting pretty antsy with me,” he asks her.
They’re not on the best of terms, but they work together fine. Now they have a common interest. “I don’t know if it was just a faulty reading, or a—a fluke, or what, but King’s in with a kid right now who’s really anxious, so she was demonstrating some of the workup—”
“I said fast, Santos,” he says, concern catching in his brow at the mention of Mel’s name.
“Her pulse ox was 92.” She has to swallow back… something. Nervousness, maybe. Concern if she were to convince herself she cared that much. “When she demonstrated the pulse oximeter, her pulse ox was 92.”
Mel struggles to eat; the others notice. No one's loud about it, but no one has to be.
“So what is it?”
“What?” Garcia repeats. “What is what?”
Trinity untangled herself, eyes looking at Garcia’s face. “You wouldn't come here just to—” she pauses, suddenly she doesn't even know how her mouth refuses to say to fuck me or to warm my bed. Maybe because both put a sickening twist on her stomach and a lump in her throat. “To do this.” She says instead.
Garcia looks genuinely confused. “Should I have any other reason?”
Or, Trinity Santos and the ten months of her unlabeled relationship with Garcia.
Summary
“We both knew what we were getting into when we started seeing each other,” Garcia eventually said. She looked over her shoulder, glancing at Santos. “And we both agreed this was just casual, didn’t we?”
She didn’t know if she was reminding herself or reminding Santos about their arrangement.
“I know we did… just wanted to make sure you didn’t mean–”
“I was tired and tipsy and you made me come not even thirty seconds before that. I wasn’t exactly in the sharpest state of mind,” Garcia cut off, not unkindly. “Let’s not make this a big deal.”
Summary
Trinity takes a deep breath, steeling herself. “I was wondering whether I could switch to working night shifts. All the time.”
Abbot raises his eyebrows, not actually looking that surprised. “May I ask what brought this on?”
“Just…” avoiding my ex-not-even-girlfriend? Probably not the best thing to say. “Just looking for a new experience. I feel like I could learn a lot from working nights.”
He stares at her for a moment. It’s a little unnerving, and Trinity feels her back straighten instinctively. Then he smiles, clapping his hands together.
“About time.”
