“Doc’s gonna get down here and fix you up, okay?” He’s lying. The amount of blood pouring from the kid’s side is too much. No reason to say that though. No reason not to lie.
The kid had always been kind to him. Kinder than any of the folks who he’d spent his entire life around had ever been. A little kindness was the least he could spare after how badly he’d fucked things up.
But Avery’s not stupid either—he can see it all too clear in their face that they know he’s lying to them. They force their mouth into a pained smile anyway, giving a short, shaky nod. Playing along. Being kind to him even as they lie there on the cold floor, bleeding out from a bullet Julius put in them himself.

“Ah, ah. This—” Doris pauses, thinking of Jasper’s annoying American expressions. “—is my way or the highway. Yeah?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Jasper says, snorting out a laugh. “You’re really letting her yank you around by the leash, huh, kid?”
Guy’s brow furrows and he opens his mouth to respond, but Doris beats him to it. “Jealous are we?”
