“You are still you, yes?” Ilya repeated. “You are still slow hockey player with pretty freckles, yes?” It was a weak attempt at a joke, so Ilya shook it away and tried again. “You are still Shane, same person, same brain, yes?”

Shane blinked up at him, thinking. Then, nodding slowly. “Mostly. Yeah. I don’t know about a name or anything yet, but—. Yeah. I’m still me.”

    “Then it does not matter.”

“Shane motherfucking Hollander?” Arden gaped. “Roz’s girlfriend is Shane Hollander?”

Ilya grinned broadly, spreading his arms like an emperor at the podium. “I am just that good.”

“Ah,” David says, approaching Ilya and pulling him in for a warm handshake. Ilya looks startled, but collects himself quickly, offering David a tight smile. “Our Swedish prince,” David teases, winking in Shane’s direction.

“I feel really good about this kid, I think he could be great on your wing, he just needs some help settling in. Someone to show him the ropes.”

    “Yes.”

The line went silent for a moment. Ilya wasn’t really sure why his coach felt the need to run this by him.

“Rozanov,” his coach said at last. “I want him to live with you.”

Ilya blinked, then nearly shouted into the phone. “What?”

    Summary

As a straight man, Ilya Rozanov has never had a gay roommate before, but it’s going pretty well. Shane Hollander is kind, silly, and an even bigger hockey nut than Ilya.

So when Shane starts bringing men over, and Ilya begins to want to bash their fucking heads in, Ilya comes to a startling conclusion: He must be homophobic.

    (He’s jealous.)

    “You’re stuck with him now.”

Ilya smiles. He thinks he could spend the rest of his life in this moment, smiling at them. In fact, he gets the distinct feeling that the rest of his life will become, in essence, variations of this moment: different seasons, and cities, and smells, but the same boy glued to his side, like glitter after a party.

“Good,” Ilya says. “I was hoping.”
