Johnny finds every commercial annoying, if only to uphold his seething, all-consuming hate for the corps. When Johnny figured out what “Are you a NiCola man?” was short-hand for, he was incensed for days. He couldn’t leave the subject alone. As if it was V’s decision what became Night City nomenclature or not.
“What’s next? What other kind of self-identification can the corps twist and take from us? We’re going to come out of the womb and be slapped with an Arasaka or Militech sticker at birth at this point!” Johnny seethed.
Flickering out of existence for a moment, only to pop back up right in front of the offending NiCola poster, Johnny slammed a hand so hard against it his entire arm burst into a shivering spray of pixels. “It’s the commodification of asses, V!” He had roared. Johnny was a solely ass-driven Plato, and V his very unwilling Aristotle.
“So, are you a NiCola man?” V asked, gesturing to the lithe mascot’s bare bottom poised seductively over a monstrous beetle.
“I am not a NiCola man,” Johnny growled, “I am an ass man.” His chrome finger thunks violently against the screen, punctuating each word, “an ass man.”

“Night, Ker.” A voice mocks in V’s head.
“Shut the fuck up.” V mutters, tapping the faux-nail of his cybernetic hand against his bottom lip. There’s no reply to the text he sent Kerry. No three dots. He listlessly scrolls up in the conversation, flings it back down to the bottom to refresh, and still, no new text. Fuck. V overstepped. He pushes his pillows down, gives them a few unnecessary punches before settling back in a huff in his bed.
“This how gonks flirt nowadays? That’s pathetic.” Johnny complains, “I told you. Kerry doesn’t go for that shit.”
“What? Selfies are…” V struggles to find the word. Romantic? Hardly. And the one he sent wasn’t sexy; he wasn’t working that mysterious angle, didn’t even pretend he was out and living it up to make himself look better. It was just him, his bed, and his own dumbass face staring back at him from his holo screen. V ends lamely with a, “fuck…”
“Send him your dick, bitch boy.” Johnny hoots.

V does watch him leave. It is Kerry Eurodyne in the flesh, afterall; freckled skin in some sort of quasi-kimono that just skims the tops of his thighs, high up to the waterline. His hips have a sway, no doubt aided by the whisky V is tasting on his back palate with each exhale, giving him just the quickest flashes of the bottom of his ass—
And as soon as it occurs, he immediately feels himself throw the thought away, unwillingly, as if possessed.
Pettily, V grabs the thought again before it can be lost in the heething swarm of his hindbrain, pulls it to the very forefront: Kerry Eurodyne’s ass cheeks, tanned and looking grabbable, and he can hear Johnny pitch a fit and stomp around his head before he’s suddenly crackling to life next to V, perched gargoyle-esque on the back of Kerry’s couch. He glowers down at him.
“So,” V starts, “a concert?”

Everything is going on fine in V’s life: born and raised as a bodyguard by the Arasaka’s family, his life has always been planned, logical, controlled. Except for the visions that sometimes trigger in his brain seemingly at random. Sensations of hands ghosting over his body and of lips trailing over his skin. Voices too; warm, laughing, whispering in his ear. And a word: Beloved.
It all comes crashing down when Saburo Arasaka travels all the way from Japan to meet his son at the Konpeki Plaza on the same night two mercs raid the suite looking for a piece of tech. As Yorinobu-sama’s personal bodyguard, V is sent to deal with the intruders while the heir investigates his father’s mysterious death by poisoning.
In the penthouse, V fights off the thieves, but everything stops when one of his opponents finally sees his face and freezes. It seems like this merc, which V recognizes as Kerry Eurodyne, one of the top dogs of the Afterlife, knows him. Strange thing is, V is sure they’ve never met. Not in this lifetime, at least.
Using V’s distraction over the eerie meeting, Eurodyne disarms him and makes his escape with his accomplice, but not without leaving a plea against V’s lips: come to The Afterlife.Series
