Summary
Charles was bent over the desk staring at something that Monty couldn’t quite see from his vantage point at the door, but he leapt into the air as Monty’s voice echoed through the otherwise empty basement.
“Nice jump, my genius, have you been- What are you doing?” Monty felt every muscle in his body tense up at once as he saw what Charles had been looking at. The other man had spun around to face him, and was now angled in a way that gave Monty a clear view of the desk - and the scattered entrails of his briefcase that lay open atop it.
Neither of them moved for a moment.

Charles Cholmondeley had never been a brave man. No matter how often he’d tried to convince himself otherwise, endlessly attempting to convince himself that he could do great things if he could just get over that initial fear, he always fell short of his own expectations. He’d crafted who he was from scratch, going against his own biology so that the world could see him as he knew himself to be, and yet his genes still betrayed him, forcing him to apologize for things he had no control over and step back whenever someone dared to challenge him.

Summary
It was Charles who Monty put his arm around as the auditorium lights went dark. Jean couldn’t decide if this was a new pattern of behaviour, or if it was purely the stark contrast to their last theatre outing that had prompted her to take note. Monty had been a tactile person for as long as she’d known him, that wasn’t up for debate. But Charles relaxing into Monty’s arm rather than tensing beneath it was certainly a development.
Jean let herself be drawn back into the chatter as they walked to the underground station, hugging them both tightly before they waved her onto her train. Her smile fell apart as soon as she disappeared into the tunnel, wondering when their little trio had turned into one matching pair and Jean trailing behind.
