Jisu had smiled, Ryujin had shrugged. Yuna hadn’t even been looking at her, too busy celebrating having freedom for once in her adult life. She and Yeji signed their papers and the other three signed a separate, longer one, with conditions about diverted payments and the management of ITZY’s group activities, and Chaeryeong can’t even fathom how any of it is going to work. Thinking about her future stopped being her strong suit after the age of 18.

Ryujin shrugs. Gives another easy smile that has Chaeryeong befuddled. From her perspective, this must really just be like walking into the auditorium building for the free buffet after a conference. A means to an end, and preferably one where she is satiated and her wallet remains untouched, Chaeryeong’s sweaty palms and overthinking notwithstanding. This could be good. “Why do you want to be kissed so badly?”
Chaeryeong can’t help the furrow in her eyebrows when Ryujin asks it like that. Like she wants Chaeryeong to open up when she’s closed shut herself. They’ve spent a lot of their youth in moving cars and waiting rooms and with each other, and the haziness of what’s supposed to be the most beautiful time of their lives has changed them, for better or for worse. Ryujin, the most of them all. All those years of Chaeryeong trying to come out of her shell only to have Ryujin grow one herself.
Chaeryeong figures some things out at the ripe old age of twenty-three.

It’s a great tagline in a song and an even better name for a concert. She sees it in her head, those neon bright blue signs spelling out “Karina 3rd World Tour: I Do What I Want!” Jimin laughs until she realises Minjeong means that sincerely. And starts again, incredulously, at a version of herself who could ever be afforded that luxury.

Summary
Really, Chaeryeong thinks, making brief eye contact with the embarrassed-looking driver through the tinted window, they’ve got it all wrong. It wasn’t the lack of albums, or the sparse touring, or the mistimed hiatus that tore through the group in the end. Five members meant five different directions, after all, each with its own gravitational force of desire and need. Yuna refused to speak to Jisu for a week after she sat them all down and told them she was leaving ITZY for good. Yeji had been slated to debut as a soloist first, but was then passed over after longer complications with her injury. Ryujin got the better song, but in a stroke of random luck Yuna’s went so viral that it propelled her into stardom with the general public.
