    Mobius, once a peaceful world, turned into ruins when an apocalypse broke out. Lives were lost, places abandoned.
    Sonic, the worlds hero, went missing. Shadow was utterly worried for his husband since this all started. He had been desperate to find him, but over time he slowly gave up. If couldn't find his husband with his speed, Sonic might as well just died already. But Shadow still looked for him whenever he got the chance in missions. Kept an eye everywhere.

    But on one mission to retrieve some food, he finds something........

    Gerald shows Maria and Shadow what it looks like when Sonic is deactivated in order to teach them what to do in this situation. This encounter plants the seed in their heads about Sonic not being 'alive,' and this point comes up again when Shadow confronts Sonic about letting himself get fatally hurt merely because Sonic doesn't consider himself to be alive, either.

    It is only years later when Sonic believes he's alive, but then again, it isn't like he knows the truth about what happened in the ARK.
