Summary
The cobbled stones crunch beneath Nandor’s bootheels while he runs, and he looks towards the middle of the city. The palace is closer now, its gardens overflowing with water lilies, tulips, and ponds with lily pads covering their surface. The large stone steps that led up to the palace’s entrance seem to lead on forever, their surface painted with vermilion, and the designs on them make Nandor realise where he is. As a child he used to sneak out and paint his own designs underneath these very stones, using a stolen ink brush and crushed watercolours from his Baba's room. He suddenly wants to do the same, to leave a mark of his own before he has to leave this place.
He knows. He isn’t in Staten Island anymore. He’s in Al Quolanudar.

“So... you’re a transfer student?” Jayce ventures, trying to fill the silence.
Viktor shakes his head. “Exchange student. From The Czech Republic. I was in a dorm, but the elevator is broken more than it works. Housing made arrangements.” He sets his suitcase down and adjusts his cane, his movements precise but clearly strained.
“Right,” Jayce says, feeling a flicker of guilt for his earlier irritation. “Well, uh, welcome, I guess. Your room’s down the hall on the left.”
Viktor doesn’t respond, already moving toward the hallway without waiting for further instructions. Jayce watches him disappear into the room, the door clicking shut behind him.
He flops back onto the couch, grabbing his phone to text Caitlyn again:
Jayce: He hates me already.
Caitlyn: Don’t so be dramatic. Give it time. Maybe bake him cookies or something.
Jayce: He doesn’t seem like a cookie guy. More like... brooding and vaguely annoyed at my existence.
Caitlyn: Perfect. You’re great at brooding and vaguely annoying. 😘

Summary
Jayce ran the tap a little cooler than Viktor typically liked it, so as not to irritate his back, and decided while he was at it that he was going to pamper the absolute shit out of his partner. Viktor would probably grumble about Jayce needing not go to the trouble, but he was prepared to weather that storm. All that mattered now was that he did everything in his power to ease Viktor’s pain.
