“Delmar, jus’... hold your horses. He only said he’ll keep us for the night ‘fore decidin’ if we’s good workers or not. Could kick us off any minute.” Pete reminded, almost solemnly. He sounded brash, but Delmar had known him for so long he could pick apart the true tones of his words.
Delmar turned, mouth opening to say something, before deciding against it. He pursed his lips, his blue eyes seeming slightly troubled. He nodded his head, one curt thing, “he won’t. Y’gotta trust me on it, sweetheart.” he spoke it so gravelly and below his voice–something just for Pete to hear– that it sent a shiver down Pete’s spine and made his arms prickle. Then there was that feeling again, the feeling he’s come to chase after– nothing could get to them, as long as he had Delmar by his side. Everything would turn out fine, whether they have to mold it that way themselves. Pete licked his lips. He gave a nod back, and followed Delmar into the bunkhouse.
