Ramattra learned that a princess was to arrive at the Shambali Monastery the same day he learned she was to be his charge.
It was not a chance to learn about human nature, no matter how Mondatta liked to frame it. It was a punishment.
He thought back on all the royal dignitaries that came in the past, and wondered which of them this new princess would resemble. Would she be spoiled, demanding a fast remedy that did not exist? Would she be lazy, and expect to lie about as the monks worked tirelessly to heal her and pick up her slack? Would she be sheltered, perhaps, and arrive like a weeping bride when she saw the ravager that was to be her guide?

"Vitals are still elevated, but stable. Are you sure you still want to keep trying?" Mica, the bunker operator Kafka had gotten familiar with liked to ask him this question before he continued forward.
"Come on, ye of little faith! I've made progress with him, I know it." Kafka answered back through his ear piece as he stood before the reinforced doors.
On the other side of the containment doors stood the ex-director of the entire Defense Force. It was less then a month after the Meraki Kaiju fight before something strange crawled itself out of the wreckage that was Japan. People had been sighting another humanoid kaiju wandering various streets in Japan, making sure to stay out of sight but had been known to rescue the occasional bystander. Once a pattern of appearances had been established and determined that this creature was slowly making its way to Ariaka Base, a select group of people were tasked with hunting down and restraining the abnormal beast. Once collected, it was clear from what remained of his more human side that this was, somehow, Director Shinomiya.
TL:DR An alternative take where Isao made it out, Kafka kept his final form, and the two of them learn to become human again, together.

It still seemed weird to Miko that you could drive for hours in America and be inside the same region. In the early days of her exchange here, she'd asked about it a lot. "Are we still in Nevada?" "Still Nevada?" "Still Nevada?" and the bleak desert landscape had stretched on and on and on, into the horizon and, apparently, forever.
[Miko and Bulkhead take a trip out to a drive-in theatre for a school project. Miko, at least, has a very educational night.]
