Summary
Vash likes to pretend that the only reason he’s so excited for each new class is because of his newfound appreciation for the arts. Even then, when he’s actually sitting in the basement of the media center, it’s hard not to get excited for the end of lecture. Vash fears he has gotten a reputation for fleeing the arts building as quickly as he can once the professor dismisses them. He may or may not have accidentally bowled over a few of his classmates in his haste. Maybe even a few times. But he’s got a great excuse! He swears!
Like every other Tuesday and Thursday, from when his class lets out at 1pm until his next lecture block starts at 2, said excuse can be found hiding in the smoker’s area behind the arts building.

Bucky stomps his way to a stop in front of Steve. Steve looks up at him and smiles. His flat glare is all Winter Soldier, chilling to the bone, but the restless clench of his fists is Bucky. So is the stubborn set to his jaw when he demands, “Let me scent you.”
Without waiting for an answer, he begins to strip off his gear and set it in orderly rows on the coffee table. Derringer, holster, SIG, holster, mag-pouch, IFAK, Skorpion, belt, vest —
Steve’s eyebrows steadily rise. Surely, he thinks, Bucky hadn’t brought all those grenades for him. Bucky’s glare turns murderous when he notes Steve’s bland amusement, but by the time he’s done, dressed down to a t-shirt and cargos, he still hasn’t moved from his expectant spot in front of him, so Steve gathers up his wits and says, “Uh, sure, Buck. If you want.”
And then, without any pomp or ceremony, he’s got a lap full of serum-enhanced super-soldier.

“Spikey,” Wolfwood responds, and snorts. Vash lets out another huff, indignant this time, but before he can grouse, Wolfwood comes over to where he’s still seated on the bed, propping a knee on the mattress and smoothing his hands along Vash’s shoulders. The touch makes him shiver, even through his shirt, Wolfwood is so warm. Gentle, too, when they’re like this. He pretends not to be—as if he thinks he isn’t capable of it—but the truth couldn’t be more evident.
Vash lifts his hands, and hesitates before he can rest them at the curve of Wolfwood’s waist. He has an easier time touching when he knows Wolfwood is going to take charge, which almost makes him feel guilty. Just expressing interest must have been difficult enough, given Wolfwood’s reservations around any kind of intimacy at all. The thought is enough to spur Vash into action, flattening his palms and pulling Wolfwood closer, but Wolfwood grabs onto his wrist to stop him.
“I said I’d bottom,” Wolfwood clarifies, in a low voice. “Never said that you’d be takin’ charge, Blondie.”

When a half dozen severely neglected horses arrive at Hopeland Farm Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in the middle of winter, Nicholas D. Wolfwood isn't happy that his usual vet is out. However, the new vet, one Vash Saverem, seems to know his stuff. Wolfwood quickly finds himself calling Vash out to Hopeland for less and less urgent reasons. As they spend more time together, neither can say they were prepared for the feelings that arise or what results from them.

Wolfwood's mission is simple in theory: as a knight of the legendary Holy Order of the Eyes of Michael, it falls to him to rescue the missing prince and safely escort him back to the court of King Legato, who seeks to marry the prince and join their two kingdoms in a political marriage.
Vash's mission? Find true love to break the curse that has held him trapped in his human form for the last 150 years. If he needs to temporarily escape his brother's overprotective watch for a few weeks and follow the hot knight that has broken into his tower, who's there to judge? Now, if only he could find out what the hell happened to their kingdom over the last decades to leave it crumbled and people's minds poisoned with lies about the nature of magical creatures, that would be just great.

Summary
During a game of cards, an older man spoke of his grandmother who’d seen a man that’d looked like a shooting star running through her fields of wheat and saltgrass, only to vanish at the town’s eastern border. From what she’d seen of him, he’d looked too sad to make a wish on, and she hadn’t much liked the idea of wishing on a dead man in the first place.
The story hadn’t been much of anything. It certainly didn’t tie to the lake in any concrete way, and it didn’t mention July, and it didn’t have the tension that every other rumor did.
But Nicholas finds himself in some stranger’s grandmother’s hometown north of July anyway, a couple hours’ ride up a highway that looked to be maintained only by the grace of God and hand-mixed pitch. It’s bigger than July, but that isn’t saying much. Its defining feature is a bar that markets itself as a Real Western Saloon, complete with swinging doors and a dusty piano that plays two hairs offkey to keep the tunes jaunty. What’d once been those saltgrass and wheat fields sport maize these days, and they stretch for yarz down the highway.
When he breathes in, he can taste lakesand against his tongue. He presses it to the roof of his mouth as a reminder, as an omen.

But it was still the five of them, frozen in their concentration. He didn’t recognize the voice or this lonely, haunted string of words, meaningless and unhelpful at the edge of the galaxy. No coordinates, no name, no identification. As if, more than anything, they wanted to be remembered, not rescued. It played over and over again like a song: I’m sorry, and I love you. I’m sorry, and I love you. I’m sorry, and I love you.
This wasn’t a distress signal. It was an elegy.

“That’s all the mail, dear.”
“Ah, yes. I meant a person. I’m expecting the last piece of my crew today.”
Georgia’s eyes narrow and flick over to Wolfwood, he’d shaken a cigarette out of his dwindling pack as he watched the interaction go down. He steps forward, tapping the man on the shoulder, shoving his hand forward when the man turns to him.
"I'm Wolfwood, nice to meet you." Wolfwood sticks the cold cigarette between his lips, grinning around it when the man takes his hand. The leather glove he's wearing squeaks against Wolfwood's palm when he squeezes.
"Vash. What's your specialty?"
"Break horses. Put any pony under me and I'll break it."
A blond brow quirks. "Any pony?"
Wolfwood smirks around the filter of his smoke, lazily dragging his eyes down from straw gold hair to the long plain of Vash's throat.
"Any pony."
